This past summer from August 9-13th a couple of WAC/D students and a student who graduated from the Master's program in African Studies at UCLA presented at the triennial conference of the Arts ACASA) in Accra, Ghana. This was the first time that the triennial was held in Africa, which was a tremendous coup.

Elyan Jeanine Hill, current candidate for the doctorate in Culture and Performance; Samuel Mark Anderson who received his doctorate in Culture and Performance, and Brian Smithson who is currently a candidate for the Ph.D. in Anthropology at Duke and graduated from the African Studies MA at UCLA were on a panel together with Carlee Forbes, currently a candidate for the doctorate in art history at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

The panel dealt with concepts of reframing notions of the "foreign" to move beyond and complicate Euro-African exchanges.

Elyan discussed ways that Ewe-speaking people from Ghana and Togo borrow from neighboring ethnic groups and express Afro-Indian cultural exchanges through dance performance. Carlee Forbes addressed relations between African artists and collectors from Belgium, to emphasize artists innovations and patronage in the context of colonialism in the Belgian Congo. Brian Smithson engaged with ways that filmmakers in Benin express small town ethics rooted in indigenous religion to rebut Nigerian Yoruba films that seek to "expose" indigenous religion as demonic. Sam Anderson examined how al-Hassan Wurie Jalloh presents himself as "a national and international player," using the nation of Sierra Leone as a useful articulation between the national and the international.
