M.F.A. Program in Dance

For the M.F.A. program, a bachelor's degree, with an undergraduate major in dance or equivalent experience in dance, is required. Equivalent experience in dance may have been gained outside the academic setting through avenues such as dance studios or dance performance. All applicants are required to follow the University's graduate admissions and requirements.

In addition to the Application for Graduate Admission, the Department has its own two-phase screening procedure. Phase 1 is a submission of: a statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation, official transcripts indicating degree completion, experiential background questionnaire, videos of two choreographic work samples (10-15 minutes total), and a written statement about the choreographic material submitted. Links for the video work samples should be included in the Experiential Background Questionnaire. Work samples should include a group piece (trio or larger). It is preferred that one piece not include the applicant/choreographer in the performance. The choreography should show a range of approaches to movement, thematic development, and originality of ideas. See the M.F.A. Experiential Background Questionnaire (see link below) and the Graduate FAQ for more information.

The M.F.A. faculty will evaluate the Phase 1 materials submitted by each student. Applicants who pass Phase 1 will be invited to audition in person at UCLA. The invited audition further evaluates creative potential and technical proficiency with consideration toward applicant's primary choreographic focus. Auditioning live is preferable but if an applicant is not able to attend the live audition s/he may instead submit a third video work sample 5-7 minutes in length that would best represent an expanded view of applicant's choreographic range and technical proficiency. Specifics regarding the January audition can be found in the M.F.A. Experiential Background Questionnaire (click the link below).

A link to this supplemental application is also included in the online Application for Graduate Admission.

Deadlines:

MATERIALS: November 1st of the year prior to entry is the official deadline for filing an application for Fall Quarter enrollment. This applies to all applicants to the Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance M.F.A. program. Applicants are encouraged to apply online using the application on the Graduate Division Web Site. All applicants must submit the Application for Graduate Admission to the UCLA Graduate Admissions Office online, including the required additional supporting materials (statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, transcripts, experiential background information, video presentation, audition response, etc.). Incomplete applications cannot be reviewed, and review of applications that are not complete by the deadline cannot be guaranteed. Admission to the program is for Fall Quarter only. Students who are admitted but do not enroll may reapply, but they are not guaranteed admission at a later date.

AUDITIONS: Applicants to the M.F.A. Program who pass the initial step of the admission process are strongly encouraged to audition live at UCLA. Live auditions will be held on Friday, January 19, 2018.

Video samples are due with the M.F.A. Experiential Questionnaire due November 1. The Department will send information regarding auditions to individual applicants upon successful completion of all admission requirements and Phase 1 of the admissions review process.

International Applicants:

Students whose native language is not English are required to submit scores received on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) as part of their application. Applications are not considered complete without the test scores. Because processing, sending, and receiving TOEFL and IELTS test scores often takes several weeks, international students must schedule their examination no later than September in order to meet the Departmental deadlines. TOEFL scores should be sent directly to the Department Admissions Office. IELTS scores should be sent to the Department Admissions Office and the Graduate Division. For further information about TOEFL requirements, please see: UCLA Graduate Division English Requirements
