5 pm
Room 153, Kaufman Hall

Screening of three dance films:

"Sharira" (2016), dir. Ein Lall (2003). A film on iconic choreographer Chandralekha and her approach to dance, contending with the central question of how to set free the body. It contains evocative footage from her productions Shree, Raga, and Sharira.

"My Son Will not be a Chhau Dancer" (2016), dir. Satarupa Sanyal. This film captures the dilemma of many traditional dancers about whether they should push their children in the direction of the traditional arts, in this case the defining Chhau dance of Purulia.

"The Saroj Khan Story" (2012), dir. Nidhi Tuli. This film is about one of the greatest choreographers in the Hindi film industry, Saroj Khan, who started from humble beginnings in the early 1950s as a child artiste with exceptional dancing skills, rising to be a group dancer on screen, then becoming an assistant, and finally directing superstar Madhuri Dixit, making her the accomplished dancer she was in films.
