Bryonn Bain is is a poet, prison activist, actor, educator, hip hop theater innovator, and the creator of “Lyrics From Lockdown” the internationally-acclaimed hip hop theatre, multimedia production, based on his experience of racial profiling and wrongful incarceration. Named best solo performance in Los Angeles (by Stage Raw/LA Weekly), Bain’s tour de force “hip hop opera” has been featured from Rikers Island and Sing Sing Prison to The Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall, and sold out from New York to Los Angeles, received standing ovations in Africa, Asia, Europe, and is directed by Gina Belafonte and executive produced by Harry Belafonte.  

Described by Cornel West as an “artist who speaks his truth with a power we desperately need to hear!”, Bryonn is the author of three books including: The Ugly Side of Beautiful: Rethinking Race and Prison in America (Third World Press) with a foreword by Mumia Abu-Jamal and introduction by Lani Guinier; and Fish & Bread/Pescado y Pan, a bilingual, hip hop children’s book (Brown Girl’s Books),  Bryonn is the founding director of the UCLA Prison Education Program, professor in the departments of African American Studies and World Arts and Cultures, and serves as a supervisor for the international human rights law clinic.
