Alberto Lule is a formerly incarcerated artist and art instructor. After 14 years of incarceration, Alberto was released and immediately enrolled at Santa Barbara City College where he pursued the arts and education. Alberto uses readymades, mixed media installations, video, performance, and tools used by agencies of authority to examine and critique the prison industrial complex in the United States. Using his own experiences, he aims to tie the prison industrial complex to other American political issues such as immigration, housing insecurity, drug addiction, and mental health. Lule creates artworks that explore institutional roles as gatekeepers of knowledge, authorities of culture, administrators of discipline, and executors of punishment. Alberto’s research interests lie at the intersection of education, incarceration, and post incarceration amongst various groups and cultures. He received his BA in Art from UCLA, his MFA from UC Irvine, and is currently pursuing his PhD in Culture and Performance at UCLA. Alberto has been an instructor at San Diego State University’s Vistas program at Centinela State Prison as well as a mentor and guest artist with The Prison Arts Collective for incarcerated populations.
