New students are admitted to the major for Fall Quarter only. All applicants are reviewed individually, based on information provided in the UC application as well as a department supplement of a written research paper, transcripts, and a personal essay. These supplemental materials are requested from students in mid-December, after the general UC application is received and processed. For Dance major applicants only: Students must participate in a late January/early February audition. Specifics about the audition are included in the e-mail requesting the abovementioned supplemental materials.

Change of major applications are considered once a year. Current UCLA students who petition to change their major are required to meet with the student affairs officer prior to application, but no later than the eighth week of Fall Quarter in order to participate in the department supplemental application process during Fall/Winter Quarters for admission into the program the following Spring or Fall Quarter. They are required to take selected departmental courses before and during the term in which they apply to the program (consult the student affairs officer for a list of selected courses). The Department strongly prefers a minimum 3.0 GPA in World Arts and Cultures courses and an overall 2.0 GPA. Freshmen and sophomore applicants must have no more than 90 quarter units at the beginning of the Winter Quarter, and junior applicants must have no more than 120 quarter units at the beginning of the Winter Quarter. For Dance Change of Major applicants only: All students are required to audition in early Winter Quarter and may be interviewed as part of the application process. For WAC Change of Major applicants only: Students may be interviewed as part of the application process. Review the "Change of Major Application Worksheet" below for more information about the application and admission process.

The information above can be found in UCLA's General Catalog.

Supplemental Application Materials

Beginning in November, applicants who followed directions as provided above may access the online supplemental application for either the World Arts and Cultures or Dance major. Application is due on Sunday, December 15, 2019 and can be located here: https://supplemental.arts.ucla.edu/login.php . The application includes the following specific departmental requirements:

Questionnaire

Personal Statement

Audition (for Dance major applications only)

Sample Research Paper

Unofficial Transcripts

UC Applications are due separately from the Department’s Supplemental Application.  Once an applicant submits the UC Application indicating the World Arts and Cultures major or the Dance major as their first choice major to UCLA, they will receive the Supplemental Application information from the School of Arts and Architecture.  Undergraduate applicants must submit both the UC application and department supplement to be considered for admission into the majors.

Audition (Dance applicants only): Applicants may audition on Friday, January 31, 2020 or by video if unable to attend the live audition. All Dance applicants are strongly encouraged to audition in person if at all possible. Applicants are requested to perform a one-minute piece of your own choreography in a style most comfortable to you. You may show studio or in-performance work.

All supplemental material must be submitted through the online upload system; any physical material submitted to the department cannot be considered in the review process. Supplemental application worksheets are available for PDF download, which includes detailed instructions on submission as well as formatting guidelines:
