Malia Lam, a WAC/D Dance Alum is coming to teach a gyrotonics and floorwork class on 5/2/25 in Room 230 from 10am-12pm.
Class description:
Your body is not the same every day and this collab dance class allows students to delve deeper into how they engage with their bodies within dance. Perfectly incorporating the cross training dancers need to keep a long lasting career, a healthy body, and so that the connections can be discovered all at once!
• Class starts with a Gyrokinesis inspired warm up, Key principles are introduced to help dancers research their bodies for that day.
• Those principles are then expanded on with improv and across the floor exercises. Finding useful connections from the gyrotonic method for dance.
• Finally, dancers are taught a dance phrase challenging them to apply these connections. Floorwork, my style of dance, takes inspiration from capoeira and breakdancing mixing it with contemporary dance
Teaching dance technique with Gyrotonic in the same class allows students to find body awareness and connectivity while doing strenuous dance movements without injuring themselves. This class emphasizes flexibility and breathwork, while consciously activating the nerves and muscles to make healthy, balanced pathways in the body for dance.
